Biography
Sebas Velasco is a contemporary Spanish artist born in 1988 in Burgos, Spain. He lives and works between Bilbao and various international cities where he develops a work at the crossroads of contemporary figurative painting, street art, and urban realism.
Graduated from the Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country (Universidad del País Vasco – UPV/EHU), he first gained recognition through his monumental frescoes created in public spaces before transposing his universe onto canvas. His work is today recognized for its ability to represent the poetry of contemporary urban landscapes, exploring the margins of large metropolises, modernist architectures, peripheral neighborhoods, and night atmospheres bathed in artificial lights.
Influenced by graffiti, cinema, documentary photography, post-Soviet landscapes, as well as the works of realist painters like Edward Hopper, Sebas Velasco builds an iconography deeply rooted in everyday life. His compositions represent residential buildings, gas stations, parking lots, neon-lit facades, billboards, or anonymous figures moving through silent urban spaces. Through this aesthetic of the banal, he questions the notions of collective memory, identity, globalization, and the transformation of contemporary cities.
His creative process relies on significant photographic work carried out during his travels in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia, or Central Asia. These images form the basis of paintings executed mainly in oil on canvas, to which are sometimes added aerosol interventions, recalling his journey in graffiti. His subtle treatment of light, reflections, and chromatic contrasts gives his works a cinematic atmosphere where the human presence often appears discreet, reinforcing the feeling of solitude, contemplation, and mystery.
Since the beginning of his career, Sebas Velasco has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Spain and internationally. He has notably exhibited at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, Vertical Gallery in Chicago, Jonathan LeVine Gallery (now JLG) in New York, StolenSpace Gallery in London, as well as within galleries and institutions in Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, South Korea, and Japan. His works are today present in many international private collections and his work is regularly presented at major fairs dedicated to contemporary art and urban art.
Through a painting of great technical mastery, Sebas Velasco renews the codes of contemporary figuration by reconciling the heritage of street art, the tradition of realistic painting, the narrative power of photography, and a sensitive reflection on the evolution of urban landscapes. His work establishes itself today as a major reference in contemporary urban painting, where architecture, city, night light, oil on canvas, graffiti, realism, street art, memory, and urban landscape constitute the foundations of a singular artistic approach.
