Biography
Charles François Vuillermet, born August 13, 1849 in Grange-neuve sur Morges and died December 5, 1918, was a painter from Vaud.
Attracted to drawing very early on, Charles Vuillermet took painting and engraving lessons with Bryner, a Zurich resident living in Lausanne. He then did internships in Munich, Paris and Zurich, then traveled to Europe. In 1880, at the Paris Salon, his Portrait of MS-C. (Samuel-Constant Vuillermet his father) stood out and exhibited the following year in London. Charles Vuillermet settles in Lausanne and specializes in portraiture and landscape.
Witness and active activist in the conservation of historic monuments in Lausanne, he published Notes historique sur Lausanne in 1896 and an album Le Vieux-Lausanne in 1889. In 1898, he urged the municipality to take charge of safeguarding its built heritage, obtaining the creation of a commission to safeguard old buildings in Lausanne which would become the Association du Vieux-Lausanne in 1902.
He participated in the National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896, the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and exhibited his works at La Grenette in 1901. Charles Vuillermet is also the author of numerous entries on Vaudois artists in the Carl Brown dictionary , Schweizerisches Künstler-Lexikon (1905-1917). He was a friend of the painter Wilhelm Georg Ritter. He is also in contact with another Swiss painter: Antonio Barzaghi-Cattaneo (1834-1922).
