Alaa Abu Shaheen is a Syrian artist born in 1983, he lives and works in Paris. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus in 2006, he worked as assistant professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Aleppo.
Abu Shaheen's sculptures are made from metal scraps, he gives them shape through hammering, welding or heating. Between the horse and the donkey, the artist plays around with the ambiguity of the resemblance of the two animals. From one sculpture to another, Abou Shaheen emphasizes between the duality of thee metal, between the heavy and complex mass and the pure and smooth material. From war to more joyful and inspirational elements, one can feel that the artist's granddaughter Rita, has a role to play in his art.
Abou Shaheen has participated in several exhibitions between 2005 and 2012 in Syria, Homs and Aleppo but also in Amman, Beirut and Paris. He was awarded the first national symposium prize for young sculptors at the Palmyra Festival in Homs and the third prize in sculpture at the gallery Kamel.
