Biography
Michaela Yearwood-Dan is a British artist born in 1994 in London, where she lives and works. A rising star in the contemporary British art scene, she develops a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, collage , installation, ceramics, and mixed media. Her work explores themes related to queer identity, Caribbean heritage, the Black diaspora, spirituality, love, care, and resilience. Through lush and vibrant compositions, she constructs immersive spaces where handwritten texts, floral motifs, and intense colors engage in a dialogue that is both intimate and political.
Michaela Yearwood-Dan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of Brighton (2016). Her practice is rooted in contemporary abstract painting while incorporating references to poetry, music, and craft traditions. She draws on a wide range of influences, from lyrical abstraction and Caribbean visual cultures to the writings of queer and feminist authors. Writing plays a central role in her work: fragments of sentences and personal reflections appear directly on the canvas, transforming the pictorial surface into a space for confession and self-affirmation.
Working primarily with acrylics , oil pastels, glitter, resin, and ceramics, she creates works rich in textures and layers. Her installations often transform the exhibition space into a sensory environment, inviting contemplation and introspection.
She has had solo exhibitions at major institutions such as Tate Britain in London (Art Now) and the Camden Art Centre in London. Her work has also been shown in international galleries like Hauser & Wirth (London). Her works have entered important public collections, including Tate Britain in the UK, confirming her place among the key artists of the young British generation engaged with issues of representation, community, and social transformation.
