Biography
Alexandra Metcalf (born in 1992 in London) is a British-American artist on the international contemporary art scene, living and working in Berlin. Her practice lies at the intersection of painting, immersive installation, sculpture, and spatial design, with an immediately recognizable aesthetic informed by the history of domestic interiors, the memory of institutions, and the codes of theatricality. Her work explores notions of gender, psychological interiority, collective trauma, domesticity, and social pathology, in a visual language that oscillates between dark humor, satire, and melancholy.
A graduate of Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Providence, Alexandra Metcalf develops a sophisticated artistic language that blends historical references, decorative craftsmanship, Victorian visual culture, and medical imaginaries.
Her work is distinguished by the creation of immersive environments where spaces become veritable narratives. She uses oil paint , watercolor, molded glass, bronze , textiles , found objects, and architectural decorative elements (wallpaper, woodwork, antique furniture). The works often take the form of theatrical installations, in which objects seem to carry memory, anxiety, and a spectral presence.
Her influences draw from Victorian aesthetics, historical psychiatric spaces, narratives of constrained womanhood, as well as literary and satirical references. The relationship to bureaucratic violence, the medicalization of bodies, and female memory particularly permeates her recent work.
Among her major solo exhibitions are Vol.18, 15 Orient, New York (2023), 1st Edition, Ginny on Frederick, London (2024), and Gaaaaaaasp, The Perimeter, London (May 16 – July 25, 2025), her first institutional solo exhibition which was particularly noted by critics.
In 2025, she also presented UFOTOFU at Champ Lacombe, Biarritz, confirming her rise on the international contemporary art scene.
His work has been exhibited in major venues such as Kunsthalle Zürich, Capitain Petzel Berlin, FRAC Corse, No.9 Cork Street London and is included in several important collections, notably The Museum of Modern Art Library Collection, New York.
