Monica Canilao is a multi-disciplinary artist known for creating unique pieces by repurposing everyday, second-hand objects. Believing that used items carry more spirit and soul, she explores the emotional attachment people have to objects—whether due to their practical use, sentimental value, or aesthetic appeal. Canilao's art reflects the idea of home as a sacred, transformative space, where objects hold meaning beyond their original function.
Growing up in Redwood City, California, between San Francisco and San Jose, Canilao was immersed in a creative environment. Coming from a family of carpenters and artists, she was surrounded by the constant flow of creation from a young age. Her upbringing emphasized sharing and communal living, where even everyday objects like worn clothes and used appliances were passed along. This philosophy continues to influence her work, where materials are often repurposed and transformed into art.
After graduating from the California College of the Arts, Canilao transitioned from painting to illustration and fiber art, feeling more liberated by these mediums. She has since developed a distinctive approach, creating elaborate installations that blend various materials such as paint, print, fabric, and found objects.
