Biography

Lucien Smith is an American artist born in 1989 in Los Angeles. He lives and works in New York. He graduated from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2011.

The artist debuted his career in New York and made a name for himself in a student exhibition at his school, at the Cooper Union Gallery in New York, in 2011. Entitled "Imagined Nostalgia", the show is inspired by the novels he read as a child. He held this exhibition in collaboration with his friend, the American artist Jack Siegel. This helped him to considerably increase his public exposure.

Smith's art is inspired by comics, music, film, pop culture, love stories and his personal history. He creates works by taking inspiration and observing everything around him. Lucien Smith produced a series of works representing rain. For him, rain symbolizes loneliness. His works draw the viewer and the artist himself to introspection into the depths of his soul and emotions. His art evolves and follows his history and personal experiences.

Having started his career in New York, he gradually abandoned the city to immerse himself in the countryside, which for him is a source of inexhaustible inspiration. He retreated to Montauk to find himself and get away from the city and the unhealthy and elitist atmosphere of the art world.

A considerable part of the his work consists of series. Smith uses many media and explores different painting and sculpture techniques. Some of his paintings are inspired by the leading figure of abstract expressionism, the American painter Jackson Pollock (1912 - 1956).

Often inspired by nature, Smith explores in his work emotions and invites the viewer to have a glimpse into them. Through his paintings, the artist interacts with his audience. He explores the emotions of each person, thus mixing art and spirituality. His works are a collection of his life.

His work has been received positively by the press and The New York Times magazine described him as "The art world Wunderkind".
