David Hockney: Lithographs

Known for his frequent use of digital photography and retouching software, David Hockney is one of the precursors of digital art. Though his name evokes images of his famous Pools series, this is only a minuscule part of his artistic work. Hockney is interested in a wide range of themes, such as landscapes, and uses a variety of techniques other than traditional painting, such as painting on smartphones and photo collages.

One of Hockney's favorite techniques is lithography, a printing technique which consists of drawing on stone and then reproducing these prints from the ink covered on the engraved stone. When Hockney produces such prints, he generally does so in black and white or in soft colors, a stark contrast to the rest of his work which is characterized by its bright and vivid colors

Hockney started creating lithographs in 1954 with his piece Self-Portrait, whilst he was also experimenting with other engraving techniques such as etching. He came back to concentrating on lithographs in 1965 when the artist workshop Gemini G.E.L contacted him to create a portfolio of prints. This collaboration brought about the creation of the series Hollywood Collection, which was followed by many others such as Friends or The Weather Series. Even after finishing this collaboration, Hockney continued to be interested in lithography and produced new series of prints in the 80s and 90s, such as Moving Focus (1984-1986).
