SALUT -Microscopic vegetable tragedy- Text by Eric SEMBACH “No, Valérie Abadie's Salvation is not lacking in depth. Far from there. Of course, the perspective of its three successive planes tends to blend into the simultaneous flatness of a Winsor-Newton paper. But it is to better bring out the hyper-worked and interpenetrating reliefs à la Escher, of a ground whose vegetation is unleashed in total freedom. Because here is a virgin forest which plays the lawns in a role of pure composition. The subject of the work is therefore not to be sought in the realistic representation of a terrace overlooking the kitchen. It is in a Byzantine plant swarm that the eye is invited to track down an elf silhouette here and a chimera or mandrake head there. We no longer know. Everything intertwines and merges in a black and white which standardizes with its binary camouflage this mysterious bestiary anything but green. How to criticize optical illusions? In fact, everything happens as if the work had no other purpose than the art with which it is made. As if reality was too simple to be shown as it is. Too simple to deserve to be represented. A bit like in Marc-Antoine Mathieu's Drawing, it is the very movement of the pencil and the pleasure of skillfully blackening the sheet and the art of composition that constitute the subject of the work. The old man in the background gives his misleading title to the painting with a gesture. His sweater, even more than his pants, is affected by the same disorder abounding as the vegetation that surrounds it. But his surprised and at the same time benevolent gaze speaks volumes, he who pierces the shadow of his retired mafioso borsalino. He situates us in space, assigns us a place, the Godfather, there on the left of the drawing. He doesn't quietly or mischievously involve us like Mark Tansey's The Innocent Eye. No. Salvation is direct. As if someone wanted to hold us back or at least warn us, at a standstill, that life is just passing by. Heart touching ". Eric SEMBACH expert for ARTactif

Valérie Abadie

France  • 1965

Valérie Abadie is a self-taught French artist.

She has been drawing since adolescence and has always shown a marked attraction for monochrome and automatic drawing.

Having started drawing with an ink pen, then with a ballpoint pen, his current tool is the pigmented ink marker called Fine Liner.

His favorite subjects are portraits, life scenes and the fantastic.

His personal way of approaching ink drawing may be reminiscent of the discipline of printmaking.

Although many of her drawings are inspired by real events, she inevitably swings into the imagination during her creations.

One could say that his works present us with "a false realism", the realistic aspect of the work being often accompanied by completely unreal details.

Journey

It was not until 2016 that Valérie Abadie decided to devote herself more to drawing.

She first obtained a distinction for three of her achievements, during the France competition of the Social Network Art Competition in San Francisco in 2016.

After a few local exhibitions, in 2017 and 2018, she began to participate in the Salon du Dessin et Peinture à l'eau de Art Capital as well as the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 2019 and 2020. She also participated in a group exhibition in a Barbizon Gallery.

She became a member of the Taylor Foundation in December 2019.

She is selected to participate in the London Art Biennale as well as the Centenary Exhibition Unlocked of the Graphic Society of Fine Art in London in June and July 2021.

She is also named in the "shortlist" of the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021 in London.
