Ank'Poo, Circa 2024

Andy Berrend

This bold artwork captures the essence of Cubism with a modernist and innovative approach. It presents a distorted face with an expression that is both intriguing and captivating. The color palette is daring, showcasing shades of blue, yellow, and green that bring a dynamic vitality to the composition. The facial features are inventively exaggerated: the asymmetrical and disproportionate eyes immediately draw attention, one almond-shaped with blue hues and the other partially hidden behind stylized glasses. The wide mouth with prominent teeth adds character, while the nose and cheeks display undulating, almost liquid contours. A vivid yellow crown with distinctive points tops the character’s head, evoking a reimagined figure of power or authority. The piece exudes a playful whimsy, yet also holds a complexity that invites the viewer to reflect on themes of identity and perception. The skillful use of shadows and thick outlines enhances depth and dimension, transforming this figure into a study that is both grotesque and fascinating. This painting captivates with its originality and its ability to push the traditional boundaries of figurative art.
