Description
This artwork presents a striking black and white depiction of a period hotel interior setting. It was drawn from a scene in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong in 1996, during the takeover by the PRC. Dominated by a bold, geometric light fixture, the scene exudes an aura of elegance and mystery. Silhouettes of two figures, subtly detailed, add a narrative layer, inviting viewers to ponder their story. The play of light and shadow masterfully accentuates the architectural elements, while soft curves contrast with sharp lines, enhancing the composition's dynamic tension. The artwork's meticulous detailing and contrast manipulation render a cinematic quality, drawing the observer into a world where modernity meets intrigue. This piece stands out for its ability to evoke curiosity and emotion through minimalistic yet profound visuals.
Presentation
From an early age, I was drawn to image creation — to the way artists could conjure life, light, and form from a blank surface. Drawing and painting fascinated me not only as means of representation, but as ways of seeing: understanding how light defines shape, how shadow suggests depth, and how two dimensions can hold the illusion of three.
Photography soon joined painting as a lifelong companion. From my first self-processed black-and-white prints to the sophistication of contemporary digital techniques, I've always been compelled to capture the world through the lens — exploring texture, atmosphere, and the quiet narratives of everyday life.
I trained initially at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, where I earned a BA (Hons) in Typography & Graphic Communication. This instilled a deep respect for visual structure, clarity, and meaning — principles that continue to inform my artistic practice. More recently I have completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at the University of Sydney, an experience that expanded my understanding of perception, behaviour, and the human experience — insights that naturally find expression and continue to inform both my teaching and creative work.
Over the course of my career, I have established and directed creative studios in London, Luxembourg, Málaga, Berlin, and Sydney, and held senior roles in leading design practices and advertising agencies. A true digital dinosaur, I was appointed Creative Director for Europe's first online service, where I helped pioneer the intersection of design and emerging digital technology at a pivotal moment in visual communication.
In parallel, I've taught design at universities and art schools in Sydney and southern Spain, focusing on sustainable design thinking, human-centred design, and the development of successful creative practice.
Today, with more time to devote to personal projects, I have returned full circle to my first love — painting and drawing. This renewed focus reconnects me with the timeless pleasures of observation and expression: translating what I see and feel into line, tone, and colour.
I live a creative and balanced life with my family who provide constant inspiration, perspective, and humour.
