Description
Inspired by the historic stairwell of Berlin’s Ellington Hotel, this painting is as much about the experience of being in a place as it is about the architecture itself.
The sweeping staircase, pale balustrade, dark steps and distinctive green tiles create a composition shaped by the relationship between colour, geometry and light. Warm ochre walls contrast with cool blue-grey surfaces, while the deep shadows give weight to the staircase and draw the eye through the building. The small figure on the upper landing introduces a human presence without resolving the scene into a story. She might be arriving, leaving or simply pausing; her purpose remains unknown.
The building, originally constructed in the late 1920s, embodies an architectural sensibility in which function, materials and form are closely connected. Its tiled surfaces, practical detailing and carefully considered spaces evoke a particular period of Berlin’s history. Yet the painting is not intended as a historical record or a literal architectural study. It reflects my own experience of the stairwell and the impression it left behind: its atmosphere, its colours, its proportions and the feeling of being inside it.
Memory inevitably changes what we see. Some details remain remarkably clear, while others recede or become less important. In painting, I try to find a balance between the physical character of a place and what stays with me after I have left it. In , the architecture provides the structure, but the painting is ultimately about the experience of inhabiting that space, if only for a moment.
Presentation
From an early age, I was drawn to image creation — to the way artists could conjure life, light, and form from a blank surface. Drawing and painting fascinated me not only as means of representation, but as ways of seeing: understanding how light defines shape, how shadow suggests depth, and how two dimensions can hold the illusion of three.
Photography soon joined painting as a lifelong companion. From my first self-processed black-and-white prints to the sophistication of contemporary digital techniques, I've always been compelled to capture the world through the lens — exploring texture, atmosphere, and the quiet narratives of everyday life.
I trained initially at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, where I earned a BA (Hons) in Typography & Graphic Communication. This instilled a deep respect for visual structure, clarity, and meaning — principles that continue to inform my artistic practice. More recently I have completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at the University of Sydney, an experience that expanded my understanding of perception, behaviour, and the human experience — insights that naturally find expression and continue to inform both my teaching and creative work.
Over the course of my career, I have established and directed creative studios in London, Luxembourg, Málaga, Berlin, and Sydney, and held senior roles in leading design practices and advertising agencies. A true digital dinosaur, I was appointed Creative Director for Europe's first online service, where I helped pioneer the intersection of design and emerging digital technology at a pivotal moment in visual communication.
In parallel, I've taught design at universities and art schools in Sydney and southern Spain, focusing on sustainable design thinking, human-centred design, and the development of successful creative practice.
Today, with more time to devote to personal projects, I have returned full circle to my first love — painting and drawing. This renewed focus reconnects me with the timeless pleasures of observation and expression: translating what I see and feel into line, tone, and colour.
I live a creative and balanced life with my family who provide constant inspiration, perspective, and humour.
