Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
This striking drawing explores the multifaceted nature of feminine power. A central figure emerges as a hybrid entity. Human form merges with the expansive wings of a butterfly. The composition balances fragility and strength. Intricate lines define the monochromatic wings. They spread wide across the paper. A small crown rests atop a beetle, suggesting a hierarchy of nature and authority.
The artist blends traditional drawing techniques with a surrealist vision. Tiny insects swarm the periphery. They create a sense of movement and organic chaos. This artwork moves beyond historical notions of royalty. It reimagines leadership as an internal force of authenticity and determination. The figure stands grounded in a sparse landscape. A fork rests at the base, adding a touch of domestic irony to the majestic scene. The contrast between the delicate wings and the crawling insects evokes a meditation on life and transformation. Every stroke emphasizes the evolution of female influence. The piece remains a precise study of symmetry and symbolic weight. It concludes with the subtle texture of the paper supporting these detailed graphite and colored pencil marks.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
