Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
This detailed composition explores the intricate relationship between nature and authority. The artist blends a deep knowledge of French traditions with a contemporary Korean perspective. A vast array of insects populates the paper. A massive moth dominates the upper register. Its golden wings spread wide. Below it, a sequence of butterflies and beetles creates a rhythmic descent.
The artwork functions as a symbolic meditation on female power. It moves away from hereditary titles toward a definition of leadership based on authenticity. Each creature acts as a surrogate for strength and resilience. The delicate use of fine art drawing creates a tension between fragility and command.
Soft watercolor washes provide a luminous background. They contrast with the precise, scientific rendering of the animal forms. Small clusters of flora emerge from the edges. They anchor the composition in a biological reality. The gaze is drawn from the celestial height of the primary moth down to the terrestrial crawl of the beetles. This vertical movement suggests an evolutionary hierarchy. Every line emphasizes the complexity of the natural world. The piece concludes with a meticulous focus on the iridescent textures of insect wings.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
