Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
A profound dialogue between nature and identity unfolds in this vibrant paper drawing. A colossal blue butterfly dominates the composition. Its expansive wings, speckled with pale dots, create a powerful celestial canopy. Beneath this delicate structure emerges a feminine presence. She wears a frothy pink skirt, grounding the ethereal insect in a human narrative. This hybrid figure symbolizes a fusion of fragility and resilience.
The surrounding landscape teems with symbolic life. Small purple creatures drift through the golden air like fragments of a dream. Below, a cluster of green cacti adds a sharp, tactile contrast to the softness of the central figure. A solitary blue beetle anchors the right side of the scene, echoing the deep hues of the butterfly. The artist blends a Ph.D. in philosophy with a refined sensitivity to form. She explores feminine power through a fantastic lens. Here, the queen is not a figure of inherited status but a symbol of self-determination and transformation. The composition balances courage and lightness. Rhythmic strokes and a saturated palette evoke a world where the human and natural realms merge into a single, poetic entity. Every detail contributes to a vision of organic strength and spiritual transcendence.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
