Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
This vibrant composition reimagines female authority through a lens of fantasy and cultural heritage. The central figure emerges as a commanding presence. She wears a sweeping red cloak that anchors the composition. Above her, golden arms rise like wings. They hold ornate vessels that pour a stream of delicate elements. The artist blends traditional Korean influences with a surrealist approach.
The palette is bold and emotive. Deep reds clash with soft pinks and cool blues. Intricate details emerge upon closer inspection. Starfish float in the periphery. Coral-like structures grow from the figure's crown. These organic motifs suggest a connection between human leadership and the natural world.
The artwork explores the evolution of power. It moves beyond royal lineage to celebrate authenticity and inner strength. The mixed media technique on paper adds texture and depth to the ethereal atmosphere. Each line is precise. Every color is intentional. The piece functions as a meditation on the enduring influence of women. It bridges the gap between historical monarchy and modern empowerment. The gaze of the figure remains steady. She stands amidst a flurry of blue fragments that resemble both rain and distant birds.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
