Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
A surreal exploration of feminine authority. This artwork merges the biological with the symbolic. A central silhouette stands encased in a geometric web. Red and white lines create a rhythmic tension. Small insects crawl across the structure. They suggest a fragile yet organized empire.
At the summit, a large moth presides. Its wings spread with symmetrical precision. This creature acts as a crown of nature. It shifts the definition of power from royal lineage to organic instinct.
The figure emerges from a delicate teapot. This whimsical detail grounds the fantastic vision in the domestic. Tiny orange flowers bloom nearby. They add a touch of vitality to the pale paper.
The artist blends Korean heritage with French artistic sensibilities. The result is a poetic meditation on leadership. She reimagines the queen as a force of authenticity. The composition balances precision and raw emotion. It transforms a simple drawing into a complex psychological portrait. The piece concludes with handwritten notations. These marks anchor the vision in a specific moment of creation.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
