Description
This abstract composition plays on a marked chromatic contrast between earthy reds and deep blues. The eye navigates between strict geometric shapes and stylized human silhouettes. White figures seem to emerge from a red block, while others align at the bottom of the frame, drawn with a fine and light line.
The space is structured by superimpositions of planes and fragments of calligraphic text. These inscriptions integrate with the material, evoking archives or fragmented memories. A large dark blue triangle anchors the composition, creating a visual tension with the brightness of the background.
The artist uses drawing here to explore the notion of territory and memory. Architectural lines intersect with organic elements, such as simplified flowers that punctuate the lower part. The rendering oscillates between the precision of the line and areas of saturated color.
The whole forms a symbolic map where rigor and fragility mingle. This work was created in 2024 using a drawing art technique.
Presentation
Yazan Abu Salameh is a Palestinian artist whose work explores how life under occupation shapes the spaces people live in and their sense of movement, freedom, and belonging. Working primarily with ink and mixed media, he depicts walls, buildings, military structures, and enclosed spaces, transforming them into reflections on restriction and the desire for freedom. His restrained compositions, often marked by small windows, openings, and touches of colour, create a contrast between confinement and hope, turning familiar surroundings into spaces for reflection.
Born in Jerusalem in 1993, Abu Salameh studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem from 2011. His work is informed by his close relationship with the Palestinian landscape and the everyday realities of living within a contested environment. Through architecture and space, he explores how experiences of movement, separation, and control become part of everyday life and memory. Abu Salameh currently lives and works in Ramallah, where he continues to develop his practice from his studio.
