Description
A bearded character stands beneath an elaborate, towering headpiece, holding both hands against his head. His flowing garment is filled with intricate black lines that resemble woodgrain patterns, while delicate pink, lavender, and pale blue watercolor washes create a soft, atmospheric background. The figure's unusual proportions and solemn expression give the composition a distinctive mixture of humor and tension.
From the Degree of Presence series, the artwork explores how people define themselves amid radical changes in society. The artist creates punk-grotesque characters whose distorted forms reflect the uncertainty and complexity of personal identity in a transforming world.
The contrast between the controlled ink drawing and spontaneous watercolor introduces a visual dialogue between order and unpredictability. The figure's exaggerated headpiece can be interpreted as a symbol of the pressures individuals carry while trying to understand their place in changing circumstances.
Materials: Professional watercolors and archival ink on heavyweight 300 gsm watercolor paper.
Shipping / Display: Shipped rolled in a protective tube. Framing required after delivery.
Colors & Shades
Soft pink, magenta, lavender, pale blue, icy blue, white, black, light gray.
For collectors drawn to contemporary graphic art, unconventional figurative imagery, and artworks exploring identity and social transformation. Its combination of grotesque humor, intricate linework, and delicate watercolor will particularly resonate with those who appreciate expressive characters and visual storytelling.
The airy pastel background and striking black illustration suit contemporary living rooms, creative studios, reading areas, and personal offices. Displayed against white or neutral walls, the artwork offers an engaging visual contrast while retaining a light, understated presence.
Style: Contemporary figurative drawing, grotesque illustration, expressive graphic art, mixed-media works on paper.
Presentation
Yana Dmitrieva is a contemporary artist whose practice moves between figuration, abstraction, and surrealism to examine uncertainty, adaptation, and the preservation of self. Her paintings focus on moments when familiar structures begin to dissolve and identity becomes something fluid rather than fixed.
Figures in Dmitrieva's work are frequently faceless. By withholding individual expression, she shifts attention toward the body itself — its posture, tension, balance, hesitation, and instinctive response to circumstances beyond its control. Human forms stretch, merge with fish and other organisms, or inhabit spaces that seem simultaneously above and below water.
Migration forms an important conceptual undercurrent in her practice, but the work deliberately avoids literal autobiography. Displacement becomes a broader psychological condition that can arise through relocation, loss, motherhood, separation, reinvention, or any experience in which a familiar version of the self no longer feels sufficient.
Her distinctive palette of aquatic blues, luminous greens, violets, and unexpected chromatic transitions intensifies this sense of instability. Landscape becomes less a physical location than an extension of consciousness.
Dmitrieva's ongoing Displaced Bodies series considers the body as an archive of uncertainty. Rather than illustrating what has happened to a person, the paintings preserve the physical state of being caught between what was and what comes next — a vulnerable, unresolved territory in which transformation has begun but identity has not yet settled.
