Description

Shim Moon Seup's (2016) reflects an intimate and concentrated expression of the artist's ongoing exploration of rhythm, materiality, and perception. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the composition is structured through horizontal bands of soft blue and grey tones, layered with subtle variations that create a luminous and tactile surface.

Measuring 72.7 x 60.6 cm, this more compact format enhances the sense of proximity and introspection. The composition is marked by clearly defined horizontal divisions, where each band carries distinct tonal nuances while remaining harmoniously integrated within the whole. The surface reveals delicate vertical drips and traces, introducing a quiet tension between control and spontaneity.

The palette is refined and balanced, allowing light to emerge gradually through the layers of paint. Slight irregularities along the horizontal lines suggest the artist's physical engagement with the medium, reinforcing the connection between gesture and time. The interplay between softness and structure creates a subtle rhythm that unfolds slowly to the viewer.

Rooted in a contemplative practice, Shim Moon Seup's work invites a meditative experience, where repetition and variation become a means of perceiving time and space. In this work, the painting functions as a quiet field of reflection, revealing its depth through sustained attention.

Moon-Seup Shim, The Presentation (619)
South Korea  • 1943

Presentation

SHIM Moon-Seup (b. 1943, Tongyeong, South Korea) is a central figure in contemporary Korean sculpture and a pioneer of the country’s artistic avant-garde.

His practice is rooted in a profound exploration of the relationship between matter, time, and nature, challenging the traditional boundaries of sculpture. Working with materials such as wood, stone, iron, and earth, the artist investigates processes of transformation, balance, and impermanence, often inspired by the maritime landscape of his hometown.

Since the 1960s, SHIM Moon-Seup has played a fundamental role in redefining sculpture, incorporating experimental approaches that engage in dialogue with Minimalism and movements such as Mono-ha, while maintaining a deep connection to Korean philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.

His work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, among others.
