Description
Shim Moon Seup's (2014) is a contemplative abstract composition defined by its restrained chromatic palette and meditative rhythm. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work unfolds through horizontal bands of soft grey and muted blue tones, subtly layered to create a sense of depth and atmospheric vibration. The surface reveals delicate variations in brushwork, where each gesture becomes a trace of time and intention.
Measuring 182 x 227 cm, this large-scale painting asserts a quiet yet powerful presence. The repetition of horizontal structures evokes balance and continuity, while slight tonal shifts introduce movement and introspection. Shim Moon Seup's practice is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy, where the act of painting becomes a form of contemplation, and the resulting image invites a similar state in the viewer.
The work's minimalist aesthetic and refined surface make it particularly suited for contemporary interiors, where it functions both as a visual anchor and a space for reflection. Its subtle texture and tonal harmony reveal themselves progressively, rewarding prolonged observation.
Presentation
SHIM Moon-Seup (b. 1943, Tongyeong, South Korea) is a central figure in contemporary Korean sculpture and a pioneer of the country’s artistic avant-garde.
His practice is rooted in a profound exploration of the relationship between matter, time, and nature, challenging the traditional boundaries of sculpture. Working with materials such as wood, stone, iron, and earth, the artist investigates processes of transformation, balance, and impermanence, often inspired by the maritime landscape of his hometown.
Since the 1960s, SHIM Moon-Seup has played a fundamental role in redefining sculpture, incorporating experimental approaches that engage in dialogue with Minimalism and movements such as Mono-ha, while maintaining a deep connection to Korean philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.
His work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, among others.
