The Presentation, 2022

Moon-Seup Shim

Shim Moon Seup's (2022) reflects the artist's continued exploration of rhythm, materiality, and perception through a restrained and meditative abstract language. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the composition is structured through horizontal bands of soft blue and grey tones, subtly layered to create a luminous and atmospheric surface.

Measuring 195 x 114 cm, the vertical format introduces a dynamic interplay between horizontal stability and vertical flow. The painting is defined by a central band of deeper blue, which anchors the composition while contrasting with the surrounding lighter passages. This tonal shift creates a quiet tension, guiding the viewer's gaze and reinforcing a sense of depth and spatial balance.

The surface reveals delicate vertical traces within the horizontal structure, suggesting the passage of time and the accumulation of gestures. Through repetition and variation, Shim Moon Seup constructs a visual field that is both structured and fluid, where each layer holds the memory of the previous one.

Rooted in a contemplative practice, the work invites a slow and immersive engagement. The restrained palette and subtle transitions allow the painting to unfold gradually, offering a space of reflection and stillness. Its refined presence makes it particularly suited to contemporary architectural environments.
