Description
Shim Moon Seup's (2016) reveals a more chromatically warm and immersive dimension of his practice, while maintaining the meditative structure that defines his work. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the composition is built through horizontal bands of deep red, terracotta, and muted rose tones, layered with subtle tonal variations that create a quiet yet resonant visual rhythm.
Measuring 140 x 210 cm, the painting establishes a strong horizontal presence, where repetition and variation coexist in delicate balance. The artist's gestural brushwork softens the transitions between layers, allowing light to emerge from within the surface. These tonal shifts evoke a sense of warmth and depth, contrasting with the restrained structure of the composition.
Rooted in a contemplative approach to painting, Shim Moon Seup's work reflects an engagement with time, perception, and materiality. The horizontal sequences suggest continuity and stillness, inviting the viewer into a slow, introspective experience. The warmth of the palette introduces an emotional dimension, offering both intimacy and presence.
Presentation
SHIM Moon-Seup (b. 1943, Tongyeong, South Korea) is a central figure in contemporary Korean sculpture and a pioneer of the country’s artistic avant-garde.
His practice is rooted in a profound exploration of the relationship between matter, time, and nature, challenging the traditional boundaries of sculpture. Working with materials such as wood, stone, iron, and earth, the artist investigates processes of transformation, balance, and impermanence, often inspired by the maritime landscape of his hometown.
Since the 1960s, SHIM Moon-Seup has played a fundamental role in redefining sculpture, incorporating experimental approaches that engage in dialogue with Minimalism and movements such as Mono-ha, while maintaining a deep connection to Korean philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.
His work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, among others.
