Description
SHIM Moon-Seup, (2014) explores materiality and time through layered vertical gestures, creating a contemplative abstract composition.
(2014) by SHIM Moon-Seup embodies a refined exploration of materiality, time, and controlled gesture. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the composition is structured through subtle vertical modulations in deep tonal variations, where layers of pigment create a quiet yet immersive visual field. The surface reveals a disciplined process, marked by repetition and restraint, allowing the viewer to engage with the passage of time embedded within the work.
The lower section introduces a contrasting dynamic, where gravity-driven drips interrupt the otherwise meditative structure, suggesting a moment of release within a controlled system. This interplay between order and spontaneity reflects the artist's ongoing investigation into balance and transformation.
Rooted in a philosophical approach aligned with Minimalism and the Korean Mono-ha movement, SHIM Moon-Seup's work transcends traditional painting by emphasizing the intrinsic qualities of materials and their interaction with space. The composition invites a contemplative experience, where perception unfolds gradually through nuance and subtle variation.
Presentation
SHIM Moon-Seup (b. 1943, Tongyeong, South Korea) is a central figure in contemporary Korean sculpture and a pioneer of the country’s artistic avant-garde.
His practice is rooted in a profound exploration of the relationship between matter, time, and nature, challenging the traditional boundaries of sculpture. Working with materials such as wood, stone, iron, and earth, the artist investigates processes of transformation, balance, and impermanence, often inspired by the maritime landscape of his hometown.
Since the 1960s, SHIM Moon-Seup has played a fundamental role in redefining sculpture, incorporating experimental approaches that engage in dialogue with Minimalism and movements such as Mono-ha, while maintaining a deep connection to Korean philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.
His work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, among others.
