Description

Contemporary Fauvist-inspired floral still life, directly inspired by Henri Matisse, expressive acrylic painting on heavyweight professional acid-free paper (50 × 65 cm / 19.7 × 25.6 inches), featuring a radiant, high-contrast palette of luminous chartreuse yellow, saturated cobalt and sky blue, vivid vermilion red, deep violet petals, and vibrant layered greens—drawing from Matisse's fearless liberation of color, his flattening of space, and his ability to transform everyday subjects into emotionally charged compositions.

In “Velvet Bloom," French artist Natalya Mougenot reinterprets what inspired her in Matisse: the bold autonomy of color, the simplification of form, and the joy of painting as a direct, instinctive act. Like Matisse, she rejects realism in favor of sensation—allowing color to construct space, emotion, and rhythm all at once.

“What moves me in Matisse is his freedom," Natalya shares. “He paints what he feels, not what he sees—and that changes everything."

The bouquet—lush, abundant, almost overflowing—emerges as a dynamic presence rather than a static object, its deep violet blooms unfolding like gestures of softness and intensity at once.

“I'm drawn to contrasts—softness and strength, calm and vibration," Natalya adds. “Flowers hold that tension naturally."

“I don't paint flowers as objects," Natalya explains. “I paint how they expand, how they breathe in space."

Working in acrylic on heavyweight professional acid-free paper, Mougenot preserves the immediacy of her process. Pigment sinks into the surface while maintaining intensity, and each brushstroke remains visible—raw, energetic, and uncorrected. Lines overlap, colors shift, and forms are continuously renegotiated, giving the painting a sense of ongoing transformation.

“I want the viewer to feel the movement of the hand," she says. “Not a perfect image, but a living moment."

This approach reflects a metamodern sensibility, where sincerity and awareness coexist. The painting embraces the joy of color and the directness of expression, while remaining conscious of its place within art history. It does not retreat into irony; instead, it reclaims emotional honesty with intention.

Authenticity is central to the work's impact:

“People always feel when something is true in a painting," Natalya reflects. “You can't imitate that—it either carries life, or it doesn't."

In “Velvet Bloom," this truth is conveyed through the tension between structure and freedom. The pot anchors the composition, yet the plant resists containment. The outlines define forms but never fully close them. Color vibrates against color, creating a sense of presence that feels immediate and unfiltered.

“I trust the first impulse," Natalya says. “That's where the energy is. If I lose that, I lose the painting."

Color here is fully emancipated from realism. Greens are layered with unexpected tones, purples deepen into near abstraction, and shadows are expressed through contrast rather than darkness. The result is not a depiction of a plant, but an experience of vitality, growth, and unfolding.

“Art should feel alive," she affirms. “It should hold the energy of the moment it was created in."

Ideal for contemporary interiors, creative studios, design-led spaces, and light-filled environments, “Velvet Bloom" functions as both a visual centerpiece and an emotional catalyst. Its bold palette and expressive presence make it particularly suited for modern living rooms, curated gallery walls, boutique hotels, or architect-designed spaces seeking color, personality, and authenticity.

For collectors and designers alike, the work offers more than decoration—it offers presence. A celebration of color, gesture, and truth, “Velvet Bloom" stands as a vivid reminder that the most powerful art is not controlled, but felt.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
