Description

Original Contemporary Figurative Painting of Two Women, 50 × 65 cm (19.7 × 25.6 inches), Acrylic Paint and Acrylic Pen on 300 gsm (140 lb) Professional Acid-Free Paper, Varnished, by French Artist Natalya Mougenot

Part of Natalya Mougenot's ongoing series dedicated to women, Near Together is a vibrant contemporary figurative painting depicting two women and exploring the invisible threads that connect us to one another. Through color, gesture, and simplified forms, the artist reflects on human bonds, emotional proximity, friendship, sisterhood, empathy, and the delicate balance between individuality and connection.

Standing side by side, the two women occupy a shared emotional space. Their expressions are calm and introspective, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationships that shape our lives. Whether interpreted as sisters, close friends, mother and daughter, or kindred spirits, the figures embody the profound yet often unspoken connections that sustain us throughout our journeys.

The title, "Near Together", deliberately evokes a space where closeness and individuality coexist. It speaks to the beauty of human relationships: the comfort of being understood, the strength found in companionship, and the reality that true connection does not require sameness. Instead, it flourishes through mutual respect, vulnerability, trust, and acceptance.

At the heart of the painting lies a reflection on authenticity. Natalya Mougenot is not interested in idealized perfection or carefully constructed appearances. Her work seeks emotional truth. The women she paints are not merely subjects; they become vehicles for exploring shared human experiences and emotions that transcend age, culture, and circumstance.

As the artist explains:

"Every woman I paint is, in some way, a fragment of myself."

And:

"I am not interested in painting how women look. I am interested in painting how they feel."

These ideas resonate deeply throughout Near Together. Like all the works in her ongoing series dedicated to women, the painting is also a form of self-exploration. Through the women she depicts, Mougenot investigates her own experiences, emotions, vulnerabilities, resilience, and capacity for connection. The figures become both personal reflections and universal symbols of the human desire to belong.

Created through an intuitive and spontaneous process, the work celebrates the energy of the artist's hand. Mougenot allows each painting to evolve organically, guided by emotion rather than rigid planning. Visible brushstrokes, expressive lines, and layered colors remain intentionally present on the surface, revealing the journey of creation itself.

In a world increasingly saturated with digital imagery and AI-generated visuals, this commitment to visible mark-making becomes an artistic statement. Every brushstroke serves as evidence of a human presence. The imperfections, gestures, and spontaneous decisions embedded in the painting affirm the value of authenticity, intuition, and genuine human expression. Rather than concealing the creative process, Mougenot celebrates it.

Her artistic language draws inspiration from the emotional intensity of Vincent van Gogh and the bold use of color championed by Henri Matisse. Like Van Gogh, she embraces the expressive power of the brushstroke as a direct carrier of emotion. Like Matisse, she uses color not to describe reality, but to communicate feeling.

Color functions as a language throughout Near Together. Vibrant pinks, luminous reds, radiant yellows, turquoise blues, and rich violets create a visual dialogue that speaks of warmth, affection, vitality, tenderness, and strength. These bold colors are not decorative elements; they are emotional vocabulary. Through them, Mougenot conveys the energy flowing between the two women and the invisible bond that unites them.

The composition itself reinforces this theme of connection. The figures stand close together, creating a visual conversation that extends beyond words. Their presence suggests mutual support, shared history, and emotional understanding. They remind us that some of the most meaningful moments in life arise through our relationships with others.

"Near Together" will appeal to collectors of contemporary figurative art, expressive portraiture, and emotionally driven painting. It particularly resonates with those interested in themes of human connection, friendship, sisterhood, feminine identity, emotional authenticity, and the complexity of interpersonal relationships.

Collectors who appreciate bold color, intuitive creative processes, and visible evidence of the artist's hand will find particular significance in this work. Its combination of emotional depth, contemporary energy, and timeless subject matter allows it to engage viewers on both an intellectual and emotional level.

With its vibrant palette and striking presence, Near Together is ideally suited to contemporary, modern, Scandinavian, eclectic, gallery-inspired, and creative interiors. The painting brings warmth, personality, and emotional richness to a space while serving as a powerful visual focal point.

More than a depiction of two women, "Near Together" is a celebration of connection itself. Through expressive color, visible gesture, and emotional honesty, Natalya Mougenot invites viewers to reflect on the relationships that define us, support us, and remind us that even in our individuality, we are never truly alone.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
