“Between Us" — Large-format contemporary expressive figurative painting of a portrait of two men—two human beings—created in a modern neo-expressionist / metamodern style, executed in acrylic on heavyweight professional acid-free paper, characterized by bold gestural lines, emotionally charged color contrasts (cobalt blue, ochre, coral, and green), and simplified yet psychologically intense faces—emphasizing raw human presence, visible brushwork, and the exploration of connection and emotional authenticity in contemporary art.

Part of Natalya Mougenot's ongoing series dedicated to the theme of “Bond," this work belongs to a body of research she has been developing for over five years. Throughout this series, she explores one central question: what truly connects human beings beyond words, roles, and appearances? Each painting becomes a variation on this inquiry—an attempt to capture the invisible thread that links one person to another.

“I keep returning to the same subject," Natalya shares, “because connection is never fixed. It shifts, it evolves, it sometimes disappears, and sometimes it returns."

In “Between Us," the subject is not simply two figures—it is the fragile, often unspoken space that exists between them.

Over the past five years, Natalya's “Bond" series has become increasingly essential in her practice, especially in response to the contemporary world. As human interactions become more mediated by screens, faster, more fragmented, and often more superficial, her work insists on something slower, deeper, and more real.

“Connection is becoming rare," she reflects. “And when it exists, we don't always recognize it, or we don't protect it."

Through this series, she seeks not only to represent connection, but to remind the viewer of its value—to underline that if such a bond exists in one's life, it is something to cherish.

“It's fragile," she says. “And precisely because it's fragile, it's precious."

At the same time, Mougenot acknowledges a more complex truth: not all bonds remain present. Some connections are deeply real, yet do not last in the same form.

“Sometimes the connection was there, and it was true," she explains. “But life changes us. We evolve, we move forward, and something shifts."

What disappears is not the truth of the bond itself, but its place in time. The connection does not become false—it becomes distant, quieter, or transformed.

“It's not that it wasn't real," Natalya says. “It's that we are no longer in the same place to hold it in the same way."

This subtle tension is embedded in “Between Us." The figures are close, yet a space remains—suggesting both connection and distance, presence and absence. The painting holds that ambiguity: a bond that exists, but is not fixed.

Natalya's style reinforces this emotional depth. Her approach is intuitive, raw, and deliberately unresolved. Faces are simplified, slightly distorted, constructed through layered lines that remain visible and alive. There is no pursuit of perfection—only the search for presence.

“I don't want to paint how people look," she explains. “I want to paint how they exist."

Her use of line is central: bold, searching, sometimes hesitant. These lines do not simply define form—they record the act of seeing, of feeling, of reaching toward another human being. The painting remains open, as if still in dialogue.

“Perfection closes things," she says. “I want the painting to stay open, like a relationship."

Color functions as emotional language. The deep blue background creates an immersive field, while warm tones bring the faces forward into a shared yet fragile space. Contrasts are not resolved—they coexist, just as differences between individuals exist within any bond.

This approach aligns with a metamodern sensibility, where sincerity returns as a conscious choice. The work embraces emotion without irony, presence without distance.

In today's context, “Between Us" also stands as a statement about authenticity in art.

“This is made by a human, for a human," Natalya affirms. “You can feel it. A real gesture carries something that cannot be reproduced."

The visible brushstrokes, the imperfect symmetry, the living lines—all resist artificial perfection. The painting carries time, hesitation, and the trace of the artist's hand.

“People always feel the difference," she adds. “Even if they can't explain it."

Ultimately, the space between the two figures becomes the true subject. It holds tension, memory, warmth, and silence. It is where connection exists—not in what is shown, but in what is felt.

“Between Us" is not about telling a story—it is about recognition.

Ideal for contemporary interiors, thoughtful living spaces, creative studios, galleries, and design-led environments, the painting serves as both a powerful visual presence and an emotional anchor. Its bold palette and human-centered theme make it especially suited for spaces that value authenticity, depth, and reflection.

For collectors and designers, this work offers something increasingly rare: not just an image, but a reminder—that connection, even when it changes or fades, was once real, and therefore always meaningful.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
