This work was presented for the very first time during the exhibition Face to Face curated by Victoria Mann.

This collage by Denae Howard shows several elements carrying stories and complementing each other. These stories are a way for her to question her understanding of state inaction in helping black American communities.

- The review of: Doubting Thomas (skeptical construction)
It is a reference to our society at a time when everything must be checked and where lies are omnipresent, carried by hypocrisy. It is also a metaphor for the need for physical contact in order to understand and not to doubt.

- Desjardins bank: It thus wants to dissect the wealth of banks by making reference to the slave trade or even to human trafficking today.

- Yemeni Jew with the key (Teimanim) - Jewish trader from Manakhah 1931
She chose this image because it is linked to the beliefs, duality and understanding of the persecuted.
The subject was Jesus, a Jew, expressing what real love and real freedom looks like.

- Duality - female and male symbol on either side of the painting - In addition to eruptions and explosions.

- The ankh sign as a symbol of hope and malleable fertility continues through chaos.

- "I sell the shadow to support the substance," - Sojourner Truth (top right)
Evokes the artist who sells his work to create a story around the most important things. As a means of education - as a black feminist, she affirms that it is her duty to denounce the injustices suffered by blacks through artistic creation, as a link and cultural practitioner.

- The metaphorical raindrops that are Whoopi Goldberg's dreadlocks - but also one of the earliest known hairstyles dating back to ancient Egypt.

- Isreal bombs Palestine / The cops kill blacks in America (foreshadowing).

- Cowries: According to legends, cowries represent the goddess of protection who is very powerful and related to the strength and power of the ocean. They resemble the vital organs of women, so they are an elixir or giver of life. Cowries are / have been used as currency. As a currency, they were commonly used in different parts of Africa. Cowries are synonymous with prosperity and symbolize the power of density.

- Star scene with the Big Dipper -
Depicts the Underground Railroad but also the American Path to the North / to Freedom, an important route for slaves trying to escape slavery.

- West African Mask: The designs on this Bwa mask, which is used to celebrate the initiation of boys into adulthood, represent information about the myths and morality that boys need to learn before they go. to be accepted in adult society.

Denae Howard, Banked Faith Pt.2
Denae Howard

Denae Howard

United States  • 1990

Denae Howard is a multi-disciplinary artist who has lived and worked in the heart of Brooklyn all her life. Coming from a creative family, her parents realized that the visual arts were the primary means of communication between her and the outside world.

Denae explores her own practice and pushes it relentlessly. The different media she uses meet and clash, creating something fresh and uninhibited.

Through her artistic practice, she tries to deconstruct her thoughts.  She questions her growing confusion with American social and governmental institutions, marked by a lack of advocacy for Black American communities. Denae Howard becomes aware of the importance of the role played by civil society in making things change, and even more of the role of the artist within that society.

The change begins by taking in hand oneself, one's profession, one's creative practice and one's relationship with the actors of the same industry, so that the values of the artist are considered.

As a committed artist, Denae quickly understands that art can and must play an important role in her community. In this way, the creation of a network contributes to the promotion of the talents of her creative community.

Her work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, Gettty Museum and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA).
