Olga, 2017

Zakhar Shevchuk

Olga (2017) by Zakhar Shevchuk is a large-format oil on canvas that embodies both discipline and expressiveness. At 160x120 cm, the painting stands among the most ambitious works of his early career. Unlike many of his canvases, which evolve from spontaneous energy, Olga was carefully conceived. The artist spent nearly two months working daily, balancing tone, hue, and light to achieve a precise vision: a golden figure set against a silver-toned background.

The composition presents a nude model standing frontally, her body illuminated with warm tones that contrast the cooler silver-grey backdrop. She holds a draped cloth in one hand, a textural counterpoint to the smoothness of skin and the loose, broad brushwork. Shevchuk deliberately avoided fine detailing, choosing instead to apply paint with large brushes and, at times, his fingers. The result is a surface that feels alive, tactile, and rich with gesture.

Thematically, the work goes beyond portraiture. It meditates on harmony – between figure and ground, between light and shadow, between intimacy and monumentality. The golden glow of the figure transforms the composition into a statement of presence, resilience, and timelessness.

For collectors, Olga represents not only a visually striking nude but also an important document of Shevchuk’s practice, where rigorous planning meets expressive execution.
