Description
Inga Makarova’s Bananas (2021) is a large-scale mixed-media canvas (150x150 cm) that captures the artist’s signature balance of provocation and wit. Part of her series Secret Lives of Horny Insects, the painting stages a surreal encounter: a monumental hornet looms above, while bees swarm in frenzied play across a cluster of branded bananas.
The crimson backdrop suggests drama and danger, yet the mood quickly shifts into absurdity. The erotic energy of the bee orgy is underscored by the artist’s playful irony, as natural instinct is reframed through human imagination. Makarova heightens these contrasts by combining multiple media – acrylic, oil, gold leafing, and enamel – creating a rich, layered surface that oscillates between realism, pop art, and decorative stylization.
Bananas is both humorous and daring, a vibrant example of Makarova’s ability to transform provocative subject matter into art that is visually captivating and intellectually engaging.
Presentation
“To create something meaningful, something real, you should truly love what you do, as well as the way you do it, and always be passionate about it. For me art will never turn into a boring routine, as I truly enjoy transferring my thoughts and ideas into artworks." Inga Makarova
Inga Makarova is an award-winning Ukrainian painter, sculptor and draftsman. With a background in fashion and graphic design, she translates both worlds into her mixed media compositions. Inga is constantly experimenting with new themes, concepts, images, new combination of colours and forms. Lately, in addition to various sources of light (like neon or LED that are used directly in her artworks), she also started experimenting with various objects that are often quite far from art, for example sport jackets, tableware, cutlery, and even cigarette butts. Inga Makarova's desire to innovate, rather than imitate, allows her to turn even the most ordinary themes into something new, unique, and fresh, once it got reflected in her artworks.
