Description
This acrylic painting presents a commanding presence. A solitary male figure stands centered against a starkly divided backdrop. The composition splits the canvas between a muted grey sky and a vibrant pink floor. This chromatic contrast creates an immediate visual tension. The subject wears deep navy clothing that merges into a singular dark silhouette. Only his face and shoes break this monochromatic mass. His expression remains stoic and resolute. The artist employs a figurative approach to explore the weight of masculinity. Every brushstroke emphasizes a sense of stability and silent strength. The gaze is direct and unyielding. It invites the viewer to contemplate the complexities of patriarchal figures. The scale of the figure dominates the frame. This creates an imposing atmosphere of authority. The simplicity of the setting focuses all attention on the psychological state of the man. The artwork balances raw intimacy with a formal portrait structure. It captures a moment of stillness and reflection. The soft blending of the acrylics adds a subtle depth to the fabric of the clothes. The piece concludes with the grounding detail of grey footwear resting on the saturated pink surface.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
