Description
A bold study of masculinity. This acrylic painting presents a figure of quiet strength. The composition is vertical and commanding. A man stands centered against a vivid blue backdrop. He wears a simple white shirt and worn denim jeans. His posture is relaxed yet firm. Hands rest in pockets. Glasses frame a gaze that is both steady and introspective.
The Lebanese-Armenian artist employs a figurative style to explore human presence. Soft light plays across the fabric of the clothing. Deep shadows ground the figure on a dark floor. There is a raw honesty in the brushwork. The artwork avoids idealization. It captures a moment of stillness and dignity. Every fold of the garment and contour of the face is rendered with precision. The contrast between the bright sky-blue background and the dark foreground creates a powerful visual tension. This piece reflects a commitment to experimental portraiture. It transforms a personal subject into a universal symbol of resilience. The final result is a striking balance of intimacy and authority.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
