Description
A powerful exploration of the female form. This acrylic painting captures a raw, intimate perspective on gender and identity. The composition splits the canvas into two contrasting realms. On the left, a fleshy, tactile figure emerges from the shadows. The skin is rendered with organic textures and muted tones. It suggests vulnerability and strength simultaneously. The right side dissolves into a deep, nocturnal void. Dark blue streaks rain down the surface. These vertical drips evoke a sense of weeping or dissolution. The artist uses this void to emphasize the isolation of the body. It is a bold critique of societal expectations and patriarchal constraints. The brushwork remains visceral and unapologetic. Every stroke reinforces a narrative of empowerment and liberation. This 2020 artwork balances the heaviness of the dark background with the warmth of the human silhouette. It transforms the nude into a site of psychological struggle and resilience. The interplay between the solid form and the liquid background creates a haunting atmosphere. The piece concludes with a focus on the visceral quality of the acrylic medium.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
