Description
Rapidography & acrylic on canvas
This artwork is a strikingly detailed and imaginative portrayal of a fortified city, rendered from a bird's-eye view. The city is meticulously confined within massive, stone fortifications that radiate a sense of impregnable security and ancient grandeur. The concentric walls, shown in an earthy, rich brown hue, are punctuated by imposing, square bastions that suggest both strength and strategic significance. Within the formidable encasement, the complex inner layout of the city comes to life. The artist has meticulously rendered a labyrinth of winding streets and alleyways, intricately packed with small, quaint buildings that are uniformly ochre, harmonizing with the overall earthy palette of the scene. The rooftops are varied, suggesting a dense and diverse urban tapestry. Central to the composition, a network of serene blue waterways gracefully meanders through the city, providing not only a vivid contrast to the dominant browns and greens but also a sense of natural tranquility amidst the dense urban sprawl. These water channels radiate from the city's center, creating a dynamic visual flow that draws the viewer's eye inward and suggests the importance of water in this community. Encircling the outer walls is a lush, verdant landscape. The dense greenery adds a vibrant frame to the city, further emphasizing its isolation and self-reliance. The carefully defined town borders and the sprawling pastoral terrain surrounding them highlight the contrast between civilization and nature, containment and freedom. This artwork is compelling in its precision, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in the minute details of its expertly crafted world. The artist's imaginative yet plausible depiction of this fortified city engages viewers with its blend of architectural prowess, natural beauty, and historical ambiance, making it a captivating representation of medieval or fantasy-inspired urban planning.
Presentation
Pascal Plazanet is a French artist born in 1963 who lives and works in Paris, France. For more 30 years, he constantly uses rapidograph pens in his artworks on paper or onto canvas. The rapidograph is a special pen with a capillary tubular tip in which flows a black pigment, an ancient drawing tool used by architects before the arrival of the CAD.
There are several lead or tip thicknesses ranging from 0.1 or 10% of a millimeter up to 1.2 or 120% of a millimeter. All lead thicknesses are 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 which means that all tips or leads vary between 0.1 and 1.2 millimeters. The artist uses 0.2 or 20% of a millimeter.
