Description

Rapidography & oil on canvas

This artwork presents a picturesque village nestled on a hillside, encapsulated in a mesmerizing interplay of textures and colors. Dominated by a stately castle that majestically crowns the elevation, the composition superbly captures the essence of medieval architecture. The castle, with its flag fluttering atop, serves as the focal point, drawing the viewer's gaze upward through the clustered village houses. Each structure within the village is meticulously detailed, creating an intricate tapestry of terracotta roofs and rustic walls. The artist employs varying shades of ochre, brick red, and earthy tones, seamlessly blending them to convey a sense of warmth and age. This impeccable use of color not only reflects the architectural styles but also evokes the charm and history of the locale. The lower portion of the painting is lush with verdant greenery, providing a striking contrast to the built environment. Trees and shrubs are rendered with a meticulous dotting technique, adding to the overall texture and vibrancy. This technique not only demonstrates the artist's precision but also infuses the landscape with a dynamic sense of life and movement. Above, the sky swirls with dramatic hues of blue, yellow, and soft grays, suggesting either the onset or retreat of a storm. This dynamic sky adds emotional depth and atmospheric intensity, complementing the calm stability of the village and amplifying the overall mood of the piece. The combination of structural precision and emotive scenery renders this artwork a captivating visual narrative, celebrating the serene beauty and historical richness of a bygone era. The artist’s masterful execution and attention to detail create an immersive experience, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the timeless allure of this enchanting village.

Presentation

Pascal Plazanet is a French artist born in 1963 who lives and works in Paris, France. For more 30 years, he constantly uses rapidograph pens in his artworks on paper or onto canvas. The rapidograph is a special pen with a capillary tubular tip in which flows a black pigment, an ancient drawing tool used by architects before the arrival of the CAD.

There are several lead or tip thicknesses ranging from 0.1 or 10% of a millimeter up to 1.2 or 120% of a millimeter. All lead thicknesses are 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 which means that all tips or leads vary between 0.1 and 1.2 millimeters. The artist uses 0.2 or 20% of a millimeter.
