Description
In this period of strikes and general nervousness, I like to walk along the Breton coast with the sand and the granite which are timeless and reassuring presences. I intentionally stayed in the suggestion and softness rather than the three-dimensional precision of the mass. The notion of time is so different between mineral and human beings. and colors on a unique background. Spontaneously I wanted to put red shapes on my canvas. Their visual impact surprised me and I was sensitive to the need to remain very simple, without clutter. Obviously, these somewhat playful shapes make me think of Miro and that makes me smile, because it's new for me to select a few proposals of shapes and colors on a single background.
Presentation
Some artists' lives unfold in a straight line, and then there is Emmanuelle Vroelant's, made of turns that, each time, carried her a little further. Born in 1952, it was a degree in clinical psychology, then a journey all the way to Vanuatu, that led her to painting: there, two decisive encounters revealed a calling that would never leave her. She held her first exhibition in 1978, at the other end of the world.
Back in Paris, she opened her first studio as early as 1981 and soon took part in the prestigious Salon d'Automne at the Grand Palais. A period of illness then drew her away from the canvas, and she turned to psychoanalysis — an interlude that no doubt sharpened her eye for creation.
Her true second wind came in 2006, when she left Paris to settle in Brittany, in Roscoff. The light of the Finistère coast became her raw material, and she rediscovered a creative intensity that would carry all the work to come. Recognition followed naturally: an invitation to Paris from collector Michel Chamming's in 2009, then an exhibition in New York in 2010, where a decisive encounter opened the Chinese market to her. Since then, her work has travelled from the United States to China, taking in Australia and Europe along the way — a sign of recognition that is now international.
What strikes you about her is the candour with which she acknowledges her influences without ever dissolving into them: Michelangelo, Vermeer, Kandinsky, Soulages. But it is Zao Wou-Ki she names as her "true pictorial encounter". From this influence was born a language entirely her own, suggestive abstraction: large-scale works in which matter itself — marble powder, mortar, collage, plant fibres — becomes the subject, driven by an ever more radical demand for simplicity. "Saying more with less", as she likes to put it. She extends this exploration into sculpture, with bronzes in small numbered series.
Now represented by the Art and Heart gallery and present on the leading online art platforms, Emmanuelle Vroelant continues, from her studio near the sea, to make Breton light the raw material of a body of work resolutely turned toward the world.
