Description
Acrylic & sumi-ink on panel
This striking artwork presents a stark, monochromatic figure, rendered in bold black and white. The piece's defining feature is a central black void, suggestive of a head or visage, enveloped by flowing white strokes that imply hair cascading down. The artist's use of heavy impasto technique creates a textured surface, offering depth and intensity. The contrasting colors and abstract form evoke a sense of mystery and introspection, encouraging viewers to ponder themes of identity and absence. The rough, expressive brushwork further emphasizes the emotive quality of the piece, making it both compelling and enigmatic. This artwork stands out for its minimal yet powerful visual language, capturing the tension between presence and void, challenging conventional portraiture.
Presentation
Tomo Sakurai is a Japanese artist born in 1987 who lives & works in Tokyo, Japan. She had an awakening of her talent in pencil drawing as a teenager. It was the beauty of the shadow that completely fascinated her. After she studied graphic design at Yokohama College of Art, she went ahead to the path of the black and white by self-study. Her body of work is seemingly dark and peculiar, but it portrays light, hope, essence and desire.
