Description
This extremely singular and captivating work of art immediately captures attention with its bold use of contrasting colors, primarily black, white, red and beige. Skepa chose a limited but expressive color palette to highlight defined shapes and lines. The painting depicts a group of five figures, all dressed in black and wearing white masks that cover their faces, creating an atmosphere that is both mysterious and intriguing. The silhouettes of the characters are stylized and are distinguished by precise contours and angular shapes, recalling certain cubist influences. Each character appears to be engaged in a different musical activity, with varied instruments such as a guitar and a drum, reflecting a dynamic and festive scene. The characters' postures and gestures suggest movement and seamless interaction, although their masked faces add a layer of complexity and secrecy to the scene. The background of the work is split between red and brown colored areas, with a light beige ground line that seems to anchor the figures in a three-dimensional space. The juxtaposition of the background colors and the use of black for the silhouettes create an effect of depth and visual intensity. Skepa perfectly masters the art of abstraction while retaining a certain narrative, allowing spectators to immerse themselves in the universe of this composition while arousing reflections and emotions. Presentation
Skepa is a French painter and sculptor born in 1978. Co-founder of the BAFO movement.
He graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and began his first approach with graffiti painting in the early 90s.
His meeting with Jone Hopper, with whom he confuses the TBS group and other activists, is a turning point in his approach to art.
Over the years, his painting becomes more experimental, more raw and opens up to new frontiers. He draws his influences from Brauner, Matisse, Corneille, Braque and firefighter art.
Several art critics compare his pictorial production to a UFO with multiple tentacles harmoniously mixing organic Cubism embellished with a touch of unstructured Figurative art, breaking with the sanitized vision of contemporary art.
He is one of the most active artists on the online art market with a “dizzying" production of more than 1,200 works in all mediums.
