The great unknown, 2022

Allison M. Low

This fascinating artwork features a surreal composition where a horse stands majestically on the head of a human face. The horse, beautifully tinted in pastel pink, immediately catches the eye, seeming to emerge from a dream. Its imposing presence is reinforced by an atypical coat, which contrasts with its graceful and serene posture. An intriguing element of the work is the ball of flamboyant red wool placed on the animal's back. A thread from this ball descends in a sinuous manner, crossing the space between the horse and the face below, symbolically linking the two elements. This connection suggests a metaphor for thought and creativity, where the thread could represent the path of inspiration or ideas, embedded in the mind of the character visible below. The face, rendered in shades of gray, exudes a certain tranquility accentuated by its half-closed eyes, perhaps observing a rich and complex inner universe. The contrast between the horse's vibrant colours and the more neutral tones of the face creates a captivating visual dynamic and provokes reflection on the duality between reality and imagination. The use of white space around the central elements reinforces the dreamlike aspect of the work, allowing the viewer to appreciate the purity and depth of the composition without distraction. This stylistic choice invites a peaceful contemplation of each detail, revealing the artist's technical virtuosity and the symbolic intensity of the whole.
