Description
This work transports the viewer into an aquatic world that fuses Rouen architecture and marine fauna. Historic buildings including the Gros Horloge, adorned with lattice windows and richly decorated facades, rise majestically beneath a deep blue sea. Graceful penguins swim between the structures, defying the laws of gravity, creating a dreamlike and magical atmosphere. The artist boldly plays with perspective and light, giving the scenes a captivating three-dimensional dimension. The meticulous details of the architectural ornaments demonstrate impressive technical mastery. The dominant blue tones imbue the work with a bewitching tranquility, while the penguins' touches of yellow add a dynamic visual contrast. This creation invites us to reflect on the harmony between nature and culture, making the everyday extraordinary and encouraging us to imagine the impossible.
Presentation
Dominique Vervisch was born in 1953 in Sotteville-lès-Rouen. A graduate of the Rouen School of Fine Arts, he lives and works in Normandy.
Considered by his peers as a visionary painter, the artist likes to say that he "pedals against the climate". In his works, the emblematic monuments of large metropolises such as Paris, Shanghai, New York, Venice and Rouen are sometimes covered in snow, sometimes submerged.
These landscapes plunged into an eternal winter are populated by penguins, emblematic characters of Vervisch's work. The animal aims to question the functioning of our society on the capacity of man to conceive his existence in an adaptive and non-appropriative form.
Through his work, Dominique Vervisch shares climate change in a "climato-ironic" way, with a shift and mystification in the hope of succeeding in re-enchanting the future of our planet.
