Description
Evgeniya Buravleva's new exhibition, Impressions, explores how the works of the Impressionists transformed the history of art. Over time, the places where they worked — Étretat, Giverny, Honfleur — have become cultural landmarks and destinations for artistic pilgrimage.
In Impressions, Evgeniya Buravleva does not merely revisit these landscapes — she offers a contemporary reinterpretation. She examines how our perception of these places has evolved and the new meanings they acquire in the context of today's visual culture.
In this work, Evgeniya Buravleva plays with striking contrasts of color, texture, and presence. A vivid, almost surreal blue fills most of the canvas, evoking a still, deep swimming pool bordered by a dark line of trees. In the foreground, a bright red rose rests in a small transparent glass, casting a crisp shadow on the white surface.
This minimalist composition carries a subtle tension: between the warmth of the flower and the coolness of the water; between the organic and the inert; between the tenderness of a human gesture and the total absence of figures. The whole becomes a kind of contemporary still life—silent and enigmatic.
True to her visual language, Buravleva explores the memory of place, the fleeting nature of beauty, and suspended moments. The title adds a poetic dimension, where fragility stands in quiet contrast to the stillness of the setting.
Presentation
Born in Kirov (Russia) in 1980, painter and draughtswoman Evgeniya Buravleva explores ideas of time and space and their relationship with the individual. The subject of her artworks is a person exhausted by the present, forced to exist in the conditions of a post-truth world, a solitary figure on the verge of making a decision. Time and space in her works are intertwined with the character, depending on their actions. They are not separate for even a moment, remaining unabsorbed and vegetative.
The concept of light also plays a key role in Buravleva’s art. Light dissolves space and familiar objects, transforming into emptiness, a white blotch. It becomes an image of what the void conceals, leaving it up to the viewer and the protagonist to determine its meaning. Buravleva finds it important to grant her characters the experience of absence in the present moment—an existence of "no one, nowhere, and never," a solitary figure in the void.
Buravleva’s works are part of the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve of History, Architecture, Art, and Landscape, as well as various regional Russian art museums.
Since 2021, she has been included in the Russian Investment Art Rating 49ART.
