Description
Evgeniya Buravleva's new exhibition, Impressions, explores how the Impressionists' works transformed art history. Over time, the places where they worked—Étretat, Giverny, Honfleur—became cultural centers and destinations for artistic pilgrimage.
In Impressions, Evgeniya Buravleva not only revisits these landscapes, but also offers a contemporary reinterpretation. She examines the evolution of our perception of these places and the new meanings they acquire in the context of contemporary visual culture.
In this work, Evgeniya Buravleva presents a scene of great visual simplicity, yet powerful emotional impact. The gaze glides across a flat, almost abstract expanse, where layers of sand, water, and sky overlap in muted tones, as if erased by the wind or time. On the horizon, a harbor line with spindly cranes evokes distant, almost ghostly industrial activity.
In the foreground, two tiny figures, seated side by side, break the immensity of the landscape. Their discreet yet central presence introduces an intimate narrative into a space dominated by emptiness and silence. This tension between isolation and connection, distance and proximity, gives rise to a silent poetry specific to the artist's universe.
Through her subtle treatment of light, textures, and scale, Buravleva transforms a contemporary setting into a territory of introspection. The work invites a sensitive reading of the landscape, not as a setting, but as a mirror of suspended emotion.
Presentation
Born in Kirov (Russia) in 1980, painter and draughtswoman Evgeniya Buravleva explores ideas of time and space and their relationship with the individual. The subject of her artworks is a person exhausted by the present, forced to exist in the conditions of a post-truth world, a solitary figure on the verge of making a decision. Time and space in her works are intertwined with the character, depending on their actions. They are not separate for even a moment, remaining unabsorbed and vegetative.
The concept of light also plays a key role in Buravleva’s art. Light dissolves space and familiar objects, transforming into emptiness, a white blotch. It becomes an image of what the void conceals, leaving it up to the viewer and the protagonist to determine its meaning. Buravleva finds it important to grant her characters the experience of absence in the present moment—an existence of "no one, nowhere, and never," a solitary figure in the void.
Buravleva’s works are part of the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve of History, Architecture, Art, and Landscape, as well as various regional Russian art museums.
Since 2021, she has been included in the Russian Investment Art Rating 49ART.
