Illusions 2, 2017

Igor Galan

Igor Galan's Illusions 2 is a masterfully constructed surreal tableau, rooted in the artist's dreamscape and psychological reflections. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring 190x150 cm, this composition is both visually commanding and emotionally labyrinthine. It invites the viewer into an introspective world where layers of identity, belief, and perception collide.

A radiant woman in white dominates the vertical axis of the work, ascending with a mysterious smile – perhaps as an angelic guide, inner self, or archetype of liberation. Beneath her, the folds of her garment seem to cradle or reveal a series of striking figures: two bearded men in ceremonial headdresses gaze upwards, their expressions hovering between awe and uncertainty; below them, a distressed woman holds her face in her hands in a raw moment of emotional intensity.

On the right side, partially engulfed by a field of vivid magenta and crimson, another female face quietly emerges from the layered pigments – watchful, contemplative, almost whispering. Her presence is subtle yet essential, adding a layer of introspective femininity and dual perspective.

The palette – fierce pinks, fiery oranges, stark whites, and rich blacks – evokes emotional unrest and symbolic duality. Galan's brushwork varies from highly detailed portraiture to free, almost violent abstraction, reflecting the instability and fluidity of the dream world he channels.

This is not simply a painting, but a psychological mirror – inviting viewers to confront their inner illusions and the emotional figures that inhabit their subconscious. It is a signature piece from Galan's conceptual repertoire, ideal for collectors of visionary and emotionally charged contemporary figurative art.
