Description
Igor Galan's Shadows of the Ancestors is a profound and poetic exploration of mortality, myth, and memory. Created in 1994, this large-format oil painting (150 x 200 cm) draws heavily from folk motifs and spiritual iconography, blending them with the decorative elegance reminiscent of Gustav Klimt. The result is a timeless visual meditation on the ancestral presence that lingers across generations.
A procession of elongated, dreamlike figures floats above a field of deep blue – a color that symbolizes both eternity and the unconscious. Their expressions are solemn, their postures gentle, as if caught between life and afterlife. Outstretched arms and hands reach down toward symbols – crosses, spirals, runes – that hover like falling stars or messages from the cosmos. Below them stands a solitary lamb, gazing upward from the base of a darkened tree. It becomes a witness, or perhaps a seeker, rooted to the earth while the spirits drift above.
The composition holds echoes of Byzantine murals, Ukrainian iconography, and pagan cosmologies. The scythe – placed not in violence, but serenity – reminds us of the cycle of endings and beginnings. With its rich texture, earthy palette, and philosophical undertone, this painting is not merely decorative, but initiatory.
Shadows of the Ancestors is a rare and powerful acquisition for serious collectors interested in East European symbolism, post-Soviet introspection, or the intersection of folklore and high art.
Presentation
Igor Galan (b. 1964, Lviv, Ukraine) is a master of painting and graphic arts, known for his ability to seamlessly blend classical techniques with contemporary themes. A graduate of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, Galan has exhibited internationally, including in Berlin, Chicago, and Kyiv. Held in prestigious collections, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine and Berlin's Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Galan's art reflects his mastery of both technical skill and conceptual depth. Currently, he splits his time between Kyiv, Nice, and Paris, continuing to push boundaries in his creative practice.
