Description

The world we live in is a battlefield constantly testing our wits to either drown us or make us stronger. This painting is a story of the spiritual, mental and psychological battles we encounter daily manifesting as physical, emotional and psychological contradictions. It is a story of resilience in the face of oppositions and the dogged resolve to weather the storms. The painting captures a young damsel positioned between 2 crows, a metaphor for despair; the crow on the left has a halo and flickers of light around it's head giving a dreamy aura to the painting, the other crow has locked between its beak a wilting rose; reminiscent of the fact that our darkest moments can actually be the springboard upon which our greatness crystalize. Unblighted in this context is an unfazed, undaunting attitude inspite of visible and in this case, invisible contentions.

Peter Eneji, Unblighted - 21st century figurative African painting; landscape composition

Peter Eneji

Nigeria  • 1991

Presentation

Peter Eneji (b. 1991). From a very young age, Peter was drawn into the alluring vistas of creative expression - a fascination that followed him into his adulthood. Growing up in a government residential area that degenerated into a slum in Abuja, Peter saw life from the eyes of a semi-average Nigerian child which immensely influenced his art themes and philosophy in the years to come. Peter took his enthusiasm for the arts a notch further by obtaining a bachelor's degree in painting from the Cross River University of Technology, Calabar-Nigeria.

As part of his creative journey, Peter was mentored by foremost contemporary Nigerian artists like Abiodun Olaku, Wallace Ejoh, Joshua Nmesirionye amongst others, their influences did not only amplify his skills and proficiency, but largely changed his paradigm towards how he creates art.

In his paintings, he captures the dynamics of the human experience, our journeys into self discovery and becoming; our interactions with nature and the world around us in relationship to social change, modernism; the complexities of our emotions as a window into the human soul. He tactfully captures this using the human figure metaphorically juxtaposed with nature as his tools of visual communication; painting majorly in acrylic and oil mediums with bold expressive strokes. He currently resides and works in Abuja and is a member of the Elbowroom Art Movement.
