Description
Contemporary expressionist/fauvist oil on linen of a Provençal landscape by Dutch artist Bernadette Van Baarsen. Signed bottom right and presented in a silver and black case frame.
This striking artwork showcases a surreal landscape dominated by vivid contrasts and bold forms. Set against a vibrant orange sky, stylized blue trees with angular, geometric canopies stand prominently in the foreground. Their dynamic shapes suggest movement, as if swaying to a silent rhythm. In the background, tall, slender tree forms reach upward, adding depth and a sense of mystery to the scene. The artist employs an assertive color palette, juxtaposing the cool blues with the warm, fiery background, creating a mesmerizing visual tension. This composition challenges perceptions of nature, transforming familiar elements into abstract, dreamlike entities. The unique interplay of colors and forms invites viewers to explore a world where reality and imagination converge, making it a captivating and thought-provoking piece.
Presentation
Bernadette ('Berna', as she autographs her works) Van Baarsen was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing her high-school, she followed training to be a nurse and architect, whilst at the same time being a lead singer in two Dutch punk bands and making sculptures in plexiglass. Later in life she decided to pursue an academic career and obtained a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. She worked as associate professor at the Free University of Amsterdam and was member of several high-level medical-ethical committees. In 2015, she settled in France. Being essentially autodidact, she took up painting, in particular after being inspired by the Provençal landscape and friendships with fellow artists. In recent years she has shown her work at successful exhibitions in Provence and elsewhere.
