Description
A contemporary Provençal coastal landscape in oil on canvas by Dutch artist Bernadette Van Baarsen. Signed bottom left.
This vibrant artwork captures the serene yet dynamic intersection of nature's elements. Dominating the scene, a majestic tree with a robust, twisting trunk and lush foliage is set against an exuberant orange sky, infusing the landscape with warmth and vitality. The tree's branches stretch out whimsically, creating a captivating contrast with the tranquil, slightly rippled waters in the background, reflecting varied shades of blue and teal. The horizon delineates distant, shadowy hills, adding depth and intrigue. The vivid green grass at the base of the tree, peppered with mesmerizing brushstrokes, grounds the composition. This painting's bold use of color and expressive, flowing forms emphasize the artist's command of movement and light, evoking an emotional connection with nature's raw beauty and energy.
Presentation
Bernadette ('Berna', as she autographs her works) Van Baarsen was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing her high-school, she followed training to be a nurse and architect, whilst at the same time being a lead singer in two Dutch punk bands and making sculptures in plexiglass. Later in life she decided to pursue an academic career and obtained a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. She worked as associate professor at the Free University of Amsterdam and was member of several high-level medical-ethical committees. In 2015, she settled in France. Being essentially autodidact, she took up painting, in particular after being inspired by the Provençal landscape and friendships with fellow artists. In recent years she has shown her work at successful exhibitions in Provence and elsewhere.
