Description

The oil painting on Cardboard titled "The Gray Day is Silent" captures the raw, untamed beauty of a coastal landscape as it stands in quiet contemplation under a brooding, overcast sky. The scene is both dramatic and tranquil, a moment suspended between the roughness of the land and the restless, whispering waves below. The artist's use of thick, expressive brushstrokes and a muted, yet richly textured color palette creates a powerful sense of atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the scene. The rocky cliff, rendered in deep, earthy tones of burnt umber, ochre, and rust, dominates the composition, its rough, craggy surface reflecting the harshness of nature's elements. The rugged texture of the rocks, applied in thick, almost sculptural strokes, captures the ancient, weathered face of the cliff as it rises abruptly from the sea. The surface catches the dim, diffused light filtering through the cloud cover, casting deep shadows that emphasize the cliff's jagged edges and steep, unforgiving slopes. Above, the sky is a swirling mass of grays and cool blues, tinged with hints of lavender and pale green as the light struggles to break through the dense cloud cover. The artist captures the weight and movement of the storm-laden sky with broad, sweeping strokes, each one filled with tension and energy, conveying the ever-changing moods of the weather. This turbulent sky forms a dramatic backdrop to the scene, reinforcing the sense of isolation and ruggedness that defines the landscape. The sea below is painted in cool, deep tones of teal, indigo, and slate, its surface alive with the movement of wind-driven waves that crash against the rocky shoreline. The artist's use of texture here is particularly striking, with thick, impasto layers capturing the churning, frothy water as it meets the land. The waves seem to surge forward, their crests catching the pale, cold light, creating a sharp contrast against the darker depths below. In the foreground, the rocky beach provides a warm, grounding contrast to the cool tones of the water and sky. Streaks of rusty red and burnt sienna hint at the iron-rich minerals within the rocks, adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise cool, somber palette. The rough, uneven surface of the beach, rendered in quick, decisive strokes, captures the gritty, weathered texture of the stones and sand as they meet the encroaching tide.

Works by Boris Serdyuk are held in museums in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, as well as in private collections in Ukraine, European countries, the USA, Israel, and other countries.
In 2018, the artist entered the global art space of the creative platform in New York, where seven of his works were included in the catalog "Painting & Graphics."
Currently lives and works in Kremenchuk, Poltava Region.
Took his first steps in the world of visual arts within the walls of his local school, then studied at Yuriev-Polsky Pedagogical School. After graduation, he returned to his homeland and started working as a drawing and painting teacher.
Later, he realized that for an artist, creative freedom is essential. Thus, after seventeen years of teaching, he left the profession to focus on his creative work. The artist is content to have the opportunity to engage in his beloved craft, which he considers the meaning of his life.
His journey had its ups and downs, victories in competitions, and recognition from admirers, yet he never ceased his determined quest for his artistic path. In ancient times, "serdyuk" referred to professional infantrymen in the Cossack ranks. This heritage likely passed down not only the surname but also many Cossack traits to the artist, including hard work, modesty, and human dignity.
Boris Serdyuk creates in genres such as portrait, landscape, and thematic composition. His works are varied, reflecting the artist's impressions of the places he visited. Among them are picturesque corners of Kremenchuk and Dnipro views, urban and maritime landscapes, the grandeur of the Carpathian Mountains, and cozy Ukrainian villages. His canvases are intriguing in terms of color and relatively compositionally perfect, revealing the life of nature at the time of their execution.
There are also commissioned portraits and paintings, such as "Shevchenko in Baturyn." He spent over a year working on it, studying the architecture of the former hetman capital. However, the artist prefers to work swiftly, capturing the vision of a painting before it fades from his mind and before the sun changes its angle and shadows. On average, according to the artist, he spends about 40 minutes on a single landscape.
Boris successfully combines a poetic perception of the world and a deep understanding of nature with brilliant artistic execution. His paintings exude a special light and a delicate sense of nature – vivid colors on the canvas resonate with intermediate tones. The artist has abandoned contours, replacing them with separate and contrasting brushstrokes; his paintings amaze with colors, not only their diversity but also the amount of substance applied to the canvas – vibrant, vivid, voluminous.
Describing the master's works is a challenging task. Boris Serdyuk's works are special – they are painted with soul. One must see and feel the wonderful harmony of nature on the artist's canvases firsthand and touch the great mystery of Art.
