Description
Melancholy reveals Zakhar Shevchuk's talent for expressing emotion through absence as much as through gesture. The canvas is dominated by delicate, mist-like layers of violet and grey, creating a tranquil, atmospheric space. The central area is left intentionally understated – a quiet void that becomes the primary subject of the painting rather than an omission.
This sense of “missingness" is central to the work's concept. Shevchuk invites viewers to project their own emotional associations into the empty space, suggesting that the feeling of melancholy arises not from what is present but from what is absent. A pale, oval form near the bottom introduces a subtle point of focus, yet remains open to interpretation: it may evoke memory, reflection, or emotional distance.
Through softness, restraint, and a palette that borders on the ethereal, Melancholy creates a contemplative mood filled with longing and anticipation. It is a contemporary abstract work that resonates with emotional depth and poetic subtlety.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
