Description
The theme of "Retro" is multifaceted: Retro and Rearview Mirror. The painting consists of two distinct parts.
Retro means "backward," but it's also a style, a fashion inspired by the first half of the 20th century, a return to a bygone era. We are immersed in this retro aspect of the painting through the woman's hair and its constituent elements, as well as the red background with colorful bubbles. The eyes are offset from the profile of her face and are positioned in a rearview mirror. Are they the woman's eyes, or someone else's? Similarly, one hand and the finger of another hand hold this mirror, amplifying this sense of displacement. One of the hands is tattooed and wears red nail polish, but are they the woman's? The tattoo depicts a tree branch, but not just any tree: a Japanese cherry blossom branch that seems to grow and spread across the fingers. The mirror is blurred, creating an image outside of time. Are we in the present or the past?
Overall, this painting reflects a process of self-reflection, a look back through the observation and analysis of one's feelings and deepest motivations. A retrospective view of oneself.
Presentation
Artistic background and approach
Karine Langevin (KJL), a French artist born in 1972 in Dijon, develops a unique pictorial practice based on resin and mixed media techniques. A graduate in Fine Arts, she has been refining a personal visual language since 2005, nourished by Pop Art aesthetics and by a constant exploration of materials, light, and color.
Her work explores the surface's capacity to condense emotion. Each piece revolves around a specific theme and unfolds as a visual narrative. The compositions, rich in detail and symbolism, invite the viewer to a gradual, almost immersive reading, where hidden elements emerge like clues along a path.
In her studio in Gif-sur-Yvette, south of Paris, the artist shapes colorful and translucent surfaces, enlivened by glossy reliefs that capture the light and create a dialogue between depth and brilliance. The portrait, and more specifically the female figure, is at the heart of her work: a strong, expressive presence, imbued with meaning and identity.
Recognition and influence
Since 2019, Karine Langevin has been represented by several galleries that support the dissemination of her work. Her works circulate internationally, notably in the United States and Europe, where they appeal to collectors and enthusiasts with their visual intensity and narrative dimension.
Its growing influence is part of a constantly evolving approach, driven by a strong artistic identity and a continuous exploration of the expressive possibilities of resin and mixed techniques.
